Riverhead Raceway owners Eddie & Connie Partridge & Tom Gatz will roll out the red carpet Friday evening at Giorgio's of Baiting Hollow when they host the 2018 Awards Ceremony honoring 12 champions from the past racing season. Leading the 2018 "parade of champions" at the lavish affair will be 2018 NASCAR Modified and Late Model champion Kyle Soper of Manorville who at the age of 22 years old has now authored four tack titles at the historic quarter mile oval. For the first time in over a decade the top five drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series divisions will not only receive a plaque for their efforts but also a 2018 point fund check from track ownership. The seven champions will also receive their 2018 championship rings a tradition started by the Partridge's and Gatz in 2016.
It will indeed be a very special evening for Kyle Soper along with his NASCAR Modified car owners Wayne and Josette Anderson as well his Late Model owner Rob Pelis. The LM is the second straight for the Soper/Pelis combination but Soper recently hinted in a Area Auto Racing News story that he'll only return to run the Anderson Modified in 2019. For Cromarty Wall of Fame inductee Wayne Anderson the owner’s championship is his 7th overall as Wayne was a five time driving champ at Riverhead and also won the 2016 NASCAR Modified title as car owner for Shawn Solomito. Aside from all the championship plaques, ring and point fund check Kyle Soper will also receive the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of L.I. Drivers Cup, a perpetual trophy presented to the NASCAR Modified champion.
Among the five other NASCAR Whelen All American Series champions who'll be honored January 11th are 2018 Eagle Auto Mall Crate Modified champion Michael Rutkoski of Mattituck and his grandfather/car owner Buzz Chew. Buzz has been a fixture at Riverhead since 1985 when he started sponsoring a pace car for the track which he continues to do to this day. Tom Rogers Jr. and his car owner Keith Repp won their second straight Figure Eight crown while Jack Handley Jr. of Medford is honored as the 2018 Blunderbust championship, the second of his budding career. 20-year old Mark Stewart of Riverhead, a 4th generation driver from the famed Turbush family will enjoy his first career Super Pro Trucks championship with owner Andre Vega, while veteran driver Jim Sylvester of Massapequa will bask in the glory of his first career INEX Legend Race Car title.
Veteran driver Dave Antos of Lindenhurst captured the 2018 Street Stock championship and will be feted at the 2018 Awards Ceremony along with Mini Stock champion Paul Wojcik of Centereach. Both drivers had won Enduro type championships in the past with Antos a past Grand Enduro kingpin while Wojcik was a 4/6-Cylinder champion in the past. Don Nelson Jr. of Rocky Point won another truck Enduro title while Jared Halsey of Southampton scored his first ever 8-Cylinder Enduro crown. Christian Conklin of Riverhead dominated the Gut & Go Enduro class to score a career first championship.
Also to be presented are the 2018 Rookie of the Year awards to the seven NASCAR Whelen All American Series classes. New to the ceremony this year are the Most Popular Driver awards with fan voting via the track web site www.riverheadraceway.com determining the winners.
The Riverhead Raceway 2018 Awards Ceremony will feature a full wedding style cocktail hour Friday January 11th from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm with the awards and dinner to be presented starting at 8:00 pm. The affair will feature a five hour open bar starting with cocktail hour. Back by popular demand to provide the evening's musical entertainment the band Noiz will again have guests on the dance floor dancing the night way until the 12 midnight conclusion.
