.. "EYE ON RIVERHEAD" by Bob Finan Tuesday, April 3, 2012 Happy
April everyone and we are now in the month that the activity leading up
to the 2012 Riverhead Raceway season will begin to heat-up! It all
starts this Saturday April 7th with the first of two pre-season Safety
Tech Inspection days at the track. This Saturday, as well as the
following Saturday April 14th the pits will open at 9:00 am and Safety
Tech Inspections will be available with a $5 per person admission
charge. Inspections will run until 3:00 pm on both the 7th and 14th and
everyone is reminded that no car can hit the track without first going
through and passing Safety Tech Inspection. Those Safety Tech
Inspections will also be available on the two pre-season warm-up days
April 21st and April 28th and again the pits will open at 9:00 am both
days with practice starting at 12 noon. Grandstand admission for both
warm-up days is as always FREE of charge.Of course the biggest news since our last effort is the naming of Steve Tooker to the position of Co-Chief Steward joining Mike Cappiello for the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Tooker, a 30-time winner in our Late Model class as well as a former three-time champion, has seen his career now come full circle as he once served as the Chief Starter many years ago at the quarter mile oval. How long ago? He wore bell-bottom pants! Good luck to Steve in his new position! Late breaking news for our Super Pro Truck division, the July 21st feature event will now feature time trial qualifying giving our "Tailgate Brigade" two such races during the 2012 campaign. Please note a schedule change has been announced for August 4th, the Laser Show set for that evening has been scrapped and in its place will be a wild and woolly, Car Rollover Contest. It will be the one and only Car Rollover Contest of the year and we hope to make it a special one, anyone want to sponsor it?? If you do e-mail me at rwf58@aol.com. The all-time leading Late Model winner at Riverhead Raceway had a great March as he and his wife welcomed Tyler Matthew Oxee into the world Friday March 30th, both Tyler and mom are doing great! Earlier in the month Oxee disclosed that he has signed Big City Burgers of Mattituck as an associate sponsor for 2012. Big City Burgers is on the Main Road and they join Oxee's primary sponsor IGA of Southold who will fund Roger in his run for the 2012 LM title. Rob Bader has been inking some new sponsors for his 2012 Blunderbust effort as he recently disclosed that Total Dental Care of Middle Island has signed on to be a major sponsor for 2012. Coming on board as associate sponsor is Bobbique Restaurant of Patchogue. While making his announcement on his two new BB backers, Rob also told me in an e-mail he has a chance to land a Charger ride this season as well. The catch is he needs to bring some sponsorship dollars to that ride and if you are interested send him a message on Facebook. Want to send a get well soon message to RJ Gage who broke his ankle recently and the break was so bad he needed surgery. The EEKR star will be out of action for awhile. Many of you might recall RJ selling the former Riverhead Racer program at the track. Sorry to hear of the tragic death of Carl Voelker III, grandson to the legendary Carl "Whitey" Voelker and son of former BB and Figure Eight driver Carl Voelker Jr. He was tragically killed in an automobile accident in Tennessee at the tender age of 20. A few Riverhead Raceway/Long Island race teams ran the Waterford Speedbowl Blast-Off event this past weekend. On Saturday Roger & Chris Turbush took part in the New England Truck Series event with Roger in the Allied Air Conditioning entry placing 4th. Four-time and defending Charger champion Chris Turbush was 6th in his CWC Motorsports truck, both drivers noted on their FB page that they fought a loose condition during the race. Make sure you're gearing yourself up for the first three weeks of NASCAR Modified action at Riverhead Raceway starting with the opening night Twin 30 program May 5th. Over the first three weeks 220-laps of feature event action is scheduled as May 12th is another Twin 30 feature event card for the class and then May 19th is the annual NASCAR Hall of Fame 100. Barbara and Jim Cromarty are shifting this season into "overdrive" right out of the gate, don't you dare miss a lap! Until next time - BF 2012 Eye On Riverhead Archive |
