.. "EYE ON RIVERHEAD" by Bob Finan Tuesday, July 31, 2012 All
dressed up with nowhere to go best describes this past Saturday morning
at Riverhead Raceway as heavy rain washed out the Riverhead 200 NASCAR
Whelen Modified Tour event. Torrential rain hit the track at 9:30 am or
so and in just a short amount of time dropped a massive amount of water
that left the infield and access road flooded while a sudden gust of
wind blew some signs down in turn two. After Barbara & Jim Cromarty met
with Chad Little it was decided that the Riverhead 200 would now be
contested on Saturday September 15th, which in turn set up some
scheduling changes for the final three weeks of the season. While there was major disappointment among many that the race fell victim to severe weather let us take a walk on one positive that might come from the month and a half delay. First off with the Riverhead NASCAR Modified point season ending on September 8th many drivers who didn't plan on running the race this past Saturday due to being in the championship chase might be able to do so. The race will be the latest WMT event ever run here and it will be very interesting to see how this date works out. First joining the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event on the 15th will be the Blunderbust and Legend Race Car divisions, the format and distance of these two races will be announced in the next week or two. The 30-lap Charger event with time trials lost this past Saturday will now be run this Saturday August 4th along with the Twin 30's for the NASCAR Modifieds, Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks and Legend Race Cars. Also on the card this week is the one and only Car Rollover Contest of the season! The entire Miller Lite night program set for the 15th will now move back a week to Saturday September 22nd, which now also will be the Golden Auto Body night for the Super Pro Trucks. The entire program from the 15th, including the National Demolition Derby Championship will be run the 22nd with only the Demolition Derby event paying track points. All other races are non-point races with extra purse money. The stand alone Enduro that was to conclude our 2012 season on the 22nd now moves back a week as well to Saturday September 29th at 4:00 pm, in the event of rain that show would be run the next day Sunday September 30th and start at 12:30 pm. Hope you got all of that. Former Gater Racing News writer Don Hubbard was to make an appearance for the Riverhead 200 Saturday, hopefully he can make it next month as well. Ken Heagy's NASCAR WMT team wasn't going to let a monsoon stop their fun, as they did have some 300 Jell-O shots to tend to, which they were in the process of, when I left the track. Had to feel bad for the LI Mod Maniac Jim Schaefer who puts his heart and soul, not to mention money into the race he calls "Christmas in July" but think about this for a moment. With an extra month and half to work with, one can only imagine what else Jim will come up with! Going into last week he had raised some $17,000 for the race. Looking down the road a bit it looks as though I'll be hosting the Long Island Automotive Swap Shop on Saturday December 1st; just have to check one or two more things but I'm pretty sure that will be the date. Until next time - BF 2012 Eye On Riverhead Archive |
