Riverhead Raceway
Father's Day Victory Lane by Bob FInan
James Charrier of Shirley scored his third Grand Enduro victory of 2012
on Father's Day at Riverhead Raceway in a 50-lap Grand Enduro while Don
Nelson Jr. of Rocky Point notched his first 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro
triumph of the year that also coming in a 50-lap contest Sunday at
Riverhead Raceway.
In
the Grand Enduro Phil LaManna was able to pace the field for the first
lap before he was overhauled by James Charrier on the second circuit of
the race. Just one lap later Charrier's brother in law and teammate Bob
Engelfried moved to second and from that point forward the duo quickly
turned this race into a family affair as they broke away from the rest
of the pack in their Clear Beer Draft Chevrolets. The tandem would hold
onto the top two spots until the checker flag waved and were followed by
Greg Zaleski of Jamesport in his Gallo's Used Auto Parts Chevy as the
"Flying Phys Ed Teacher" placed third. The top five Grand Enduro cars
then were put through a vigorous post race technical inspection with all
five passing with flying colors.
Don
Nelson Jr. led wire to wire to win the 50-lap 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro
as he put the Repo Joe Used Auto Sales Event Chevy out front at the
start and never looked back. Nelson was pursued first by Robin
Vollmoeller for the first 15-laps of the race before Robin gave way to
his son in law Greg Harris on lap 16 but by the time Harris came to
second Nelson was long gone. Greg tried as best he could to chip away at
the race leaders cushion but would have to be happy with runner-up money
in his SGS Stone Works Chevy. Robin Vollmoeller of Riverhead finished
third in the Spit's Speed Shop racer.
Donald
"Woot" Lawrence of Southampton ended a four year dry spell when he
returned to victory lane in the first 8-Cylinder Enduro which went a
distance of 75-laps. Lawrence had the likes of Dominic Ranieri, Anthony
Pizzo and Jess Martines among other hot on his heels during the race
with the leader having to dart through some thick lapped traffic. In the
end "Woot" would hold on in the Westhampton Auto Salvage Chevy for the
well deserved win while Dominic Ranieri of E. Northport recovered from a
mid-race spin to finish second in the Spare Parts Racing Chevy. Jess
Martines of Shirley also had to comeback from a spin to finish third.
In
the second 8-Cylinder Enduro all the veteran drivers who won races in
the past sat this race out despite entering the event so that a driver
who never won could have a taste of victory. Jim Laird Jr. of Islip
Terrace would take the lead at the start of the race and never look back
to post that all important first career win in the Guelphi's Wheel
Alignment racer. Fellow racer Dege Russell one of the drivers who sat
out went one step further when he lent Laird a transmission late in the
week. Dwayne Sipila of Rocky Point was second in the LaFilms entry while
Michael Wahl of E. Islip was third in the Krazy Kars machine.
Steve "The Pitbull" Trimboli of Freeport dominated the action in the
4/6-Cylinder Car Enduro to score his first win of 2012 in a 50-lap
contest. Once Trimboli was able to work his way into the lead the driver
of the Pitbull Motors Mercedes never looked back. Gene Burbol of
Brookhaven was runner-up in the Gene's 112 Service Center mount with
Dennis Nelson of Coram third in the Nelson Brothers Racing Saturn.
