.. Fireworks And Cromarty Cup 50 To Mark Jim Cromarty's 80th Birthday At Riverhead Raceway Saturday July 7th by Bob FInan Annually
the Independence Day Fireworks program at Riverhead Raceway that
accompanies the Cromarty Cup 50 NASCAR Modified feature is a very
special program on the track's schedule, however this year it becomes
even more significant as promoter Jim Cromarty will have already
celebrated his 80th Birthday on July 2nd. Together for five decades
Barbara & Jim Cromarty have presented great NASCAR stock car and Family
Entertainment shows at both Islip Speedway and Riverhead Raceway and
asked if she had something special planned for July 7th Barbara was
mysterious by responding, "we'll see".The July 7th program will be the first of three Miller Lite nights during the 2012 season. Miller Lite serves as a seasonal sponsor for not just the NASCAR Modifieds but as well as the Figure Eights and Demolition Derby divisions, with all three in action. Miller Lite and Riverhead Raceway's marketing partnership dates back to 1985, the first year the track went to Saturday night racing after Barbara & Jim Cromarty bought the Route 58 speed plant. Al Fraser of Boening Brothers, the Long Island distributor of Miller Lite and related products will be on hand for the festivities. The Cromarty Cup 50 is run in honor of Big Jim Cromarty's birthday and last year it was Shawn Solomito of Islip taking down the win which he hopes to do again on July 7th. The 50-lap event marks the halfway point of the Riverhead Raceway season. Howie Brode of E. Islip along with John Fortin of Holtsville, Shawn Solomito, Eddie Brunnhoelzl II of Levittown, Tom Rogers Jr. of Patchogue and John Beatty Jr. of Merrick have all been in or around the top five in points and are seeking a good performance in the Cromarty Cup 50. 2011 NASCAR Modified champion Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville will make a rare 2012 appearance for this race as well. Bay Fireworks, a Long Island based and nationally acclaimed pyrotechnic firm, has year to year stepped-up their Independence Day shows at Riverhead and with the importance of Jim's 80th Birthday have promised a spectacular presentation for July 7th. The Fireworks will again be accompanied by music that will salute the 236th Birthday of the United States of America. "The World Famous" Figure Eight stock cars will provide their brand of racing that finds the cars and drivers criss-crossing at the intersection and be joined by the Chargers, Blunderbusts and Legend Race Cars. Free Amusement Rides will be available courtesy Barbara & Jim Cromarty all afternoon and evening long in the turn three grandstand area, so the youngsters can have some extra fun! The race program will conclude with a bone-jarring, car destroying 4-Cylinder Demolition Derby as Rich Fowler of Levittown goes for his second win of the year in this class. Brian Fass of Holbrook won the most recent Demo at Riverhead, an 8-Cylinder contest. Also slated to compete are Matt Mulqueen of Levittown, Andrew Fowler of Wantagh, Jason Savoy of Lake Panamoka and "Pistol" Pete Mikos of Lake Ronkonkoma. Qualifying for the night's racing will start at 4:30 pm with the Legend Race Car time trials that are followed by the Cromarty Cup 50 time trials for the NASCAR Modifieds at 5:30 pm. Feature event racing for this very special program will begin at 6:00 pm. For further information call 631-842-RACE or visit our website at www.riverheadraceway.com. |
