Plenty Of Excitement On
Tap For September 22nd
Miller Lite Night Program At Riverhead Raceway
by Bob FInan
Saturday
evening September 22nd is going to feature some good old fashioned stock
car racing along with some thrills and spills at Riverhead Raceway on
Miller Lite night with the program highlighted by the National
Demolition Derby Championship. The $1,500 to win Demo is expected to
draw a solid field of "who's who" in the Demolition Derby world. It will
also be Golden Auto Body night for the Super Pro Trucks who will be one
of three divisions running a 30-lap feature event.
On the stock car menu the Late Models will take center stage as they run
a 50-lap main event featuring time trials qualifying. Mike Bologna of
Melville took home his second LM title in as many years on September 8th
and prior to that show he told Riverhead's Bob Finan he might not be at
the keyboards of his #00. Mike was hoping to coax 45-time feature event
winner Paul McElearney of Huntington to steer his machine. McElearney
was a three time Riverhead Raceway Late Model champion who also won
three Street Stock titles along with one Grand-Am title at the quarter
mile oval. No matter who drives the #00 it will be a threat for the win.
Also expected are "Buzzy" Eriksen of Baldwin, Shawn Patrick of
Brightwaters, Chris LaSpisa of Shirley, Kevin Metzger of Massapequa and
Jeremy McDermott of Riverhead among others.
Mike Mujsce of Westhampton Beach still riding high off clinching his
first career Figure Eight title last week will be looking to win the
20-lap Figure Miler Lite night feature with driver's like Arne Pedersen,
Tom Ferrara, Ken Hyde Jr., Roger Maynor, Tim Mulqueen and "Downtown"
George Brown out to take the win.
Jeremy McDermott will not only be busy in the 50-lap Late Model race but
as your 2012 Charger champion he'll try and win that 30-lap Miller Lite
night feature as well. Other driver's who'd like to take some Miller
Lite home include, Eric Zeh, Chris Turbush, John Baker, CJ Lehmann and
"Radiant" Ray Minieri.
"Slick Pick" Tom Pickerell of Huntington has scheduled a championship
party celebration for Sunday of this weekend but first he'll try and ice
the cake on his 2012 Blunderbust title with a victory in the 30-lap
Miller Lite night contest. Tommy "The Wildchild" Walkowiak, Jack Handley
Jr., Ed Mistretta, Jimmy "The Kid" White Jr. and Rob Bader are just a
handful of the expected 25 or so Blunderbust drivers on hand that will
try and win this final race of the year.
2012 Super Pro truck champion Roger Turbush of Riverhead will lead that
division into their annual Golden Auto Body night contest, honoring long
standing seasonal sponsor Charlie Rizzo and his staff from their College
Point auto body shop. Lou Maestri, Chris Turbush, Mike Albasini and
Frank Dumicich Sr. & Jr. will all be going for the Golden Auto Body
hardware.
The winning crew chief from the Super Pro Truck 30 will receive a $100
bonus and a trophy in the name of the late Joe DeGangi, that award will
be presented by Lou Maestri and his wife Tracy in memory of their
longtime crew chief and friend.
The Grand Enduro teams will run their second to last race of 2012 with
Greg Zaleski of Jamesport the most recent race winner; Greg will be
seeking his third win of 2012 in the 50-lap feature. James Charrier and
defending Grand Enduro champion David Antos have also posted wins this
year. Other drivers to keep an eye on are Steve Mastro, Bob Engelfried,
Joe Parcelluzzi and Walter Stroud.
After all the stock car racing is in the books it will then be time to
decide the 2012 National Demolition Derby Champion with 2012 Riverhead
Raceway champion Andrew Fowler of Wantagh leading the entry list. One of
his stiffest challenges may very well come from his father Rich along
with Levittown neighbors Timmy and Matt Mulqueen. Jason Savoy, Bob
Benison, "Pistol" Pete Mikos, Louie Gardella, Frank Provenzano, Ed
Primavera and Marty Provenzano are just some of the drivers who could
easily walk off with the $1,500 winner's share of the purse and some
Miller Lite to celebrate with.
