Riverhead Raceway
Announces Rules Modifications For
September 22nd National Demolition Derby Championship
by Bob FInan
The
National Demolition Derby Championship is just days away at Barbara &
Jim Cromarty's Riverhead Raceway Saturday September 22nd and some rules
modifications and clarifications were announced today by track
officials. The Miller Lite night program set for September 22nd will
include 50-lap Late Model and Grand Enduro feature events and be joined
by 30-lap main events for the Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Pro
Trucks, while the Figure Eights will run a 20-lap main event. All
divisions except the Grand Enduros will qualify via time trials.
The rule modifications for the Demolition Derby teams are as follows.
All cars must display a brightly colored and large number on their roof
and the driver's door MUST be painted yellow.
Gas tanks in the back seat of a car must be secured to the floor of the
car and covered. All electric fuel pump cars must have a way to shut the
pump off, either wires or a safety switch which should be brightly
marked for safety crews.
Chrysler Imperials are NOT permitted.
All welding will be allowed and teams can also weld the motor mounts.
Teams will also be permitted to install a cage around the driver seat
area but nothing can be welded/fastened to the chassis.
Bumpers can be changed. Engines can be swapped as the engine does not
have to match the make of the car.
Teams can pre-bend the back of the trunk and frame. Tie-Rods can be
welded.
The driver's door can have a bar on the outside of the door or a piece
of guardrail that can only be 4 inches in front and rear of the driver's
door.
Teams can wedge and/or put a brace from the roof of the car to the trunk
to prevent trunk from going up and blocking driver's visibility.
The Miller Lite night National Demolition Derby will once again pay a
handsome $1,500 to the winner with Bob Benison of Lindenhurst the
defending champion of the event.
