Jimmy White Jr. And Paul
Dodorico Visit
Riverhead Raceway Victory Lane Saturday Evening
by Bob FInan
Jimmy
"The Kid" White Jr. set fast time, drew the pole and then led all
30-laps of Saturday night's Blunderbust feature at Riverhead Raceway to
score his second win of 2012, while Paul Dodorico of Miller Place waited
until the final Legend Race Car event of the year to post his first win
of the year in a 30-lap INEX Legend National Qualifier. The two races
were a prelude to the Riverhead 200 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
on Buzz Chew Chevrolet-Cadillac night.
Jimmy White Jr. got his night off on the right foot, literally as he set
fast time with a lap of 15.082 on the first of two qualifying laps.
After drawing the pole in the re-draw among the top six White quickly
moved out front with Jack Handley Jr., who drew the outside pole moving
to second. Handley kept in step with White as the lead duo was able to
get away from the rest of the 25-car field. Suddenly on lap 21 Handley
slowed on the track and eventually dropped to the infield, later
reporting his engine "just laid down" while he chased White. That turn
of events moved Scott Maliszewski to second but with the sizeable lead
White had built-up coupled with the fact the race would go non-stop
without a caution flag Scott had no chance of catching Jimmy White Jr.
The win came on a good night for the driver of the Busy Bee Pest Control
entry as he collected an extra $300 in lap money from Rovin Promotions,
plus an additional $100 bonus from Sunoco Race Fuels and their Riverhead
Raceway distributor F&S Race Fuels. Scott Maliszewski of Deer Park was
runner-up in the Thomas J Stock Attorney At Law Chevy, while 2012
champion Tom Pickerell of Huntington placed third in the Premier Utility
Service entry. Maliszewski and Pickerell pocketed an extra $200 and $100
respectfully in lap money.
Paul
Dodorico must like the last night of racing in the Legend Race Car
division as for the second year in a row he won the class's final race
of the year. In pre-race qualifying for the INEX National Qualifier,
2012 champion Kyle Ellwood of Riverhead broke his own track record with
a lap of 13.661 but in the redraw drew 6th while Paul Dodorico and Greg
Harris picked the front row. At the throw of the green Dodorico and
Harris would race side-by-side for the lead over the first five laps
with Harris leading lap 6 before Dodorico reclaimed the lead on lap 7. A
lap later on the 8th circuit Brendon Bock worked his way past Harris for
second bringing Kyle Ellwood to third. Over the next several laps
Dodorico, a tested tough racing veteran was challenged by the young guns
as Bock, 15 and Ellwood, 17 turned the heat up on the leader. Kyle got
by Bock for second on lap 13 and for four laps he and Dodorico went
wheel to wheel with Dodorico before Bock moved back to second on lap 18.
Ellwood's night would soon come to a bitter end while running third as
his rear bumper started to drag the track and he was black flagged to
the infield leaving Bock to try and wrestle the lead away from Dodorico.
This battle for the lead also featured some fantastic side-by-side
racing. In the end it was Paul Dodorico wheeling the Titan Global
Security machine taking home the win, his second career victory. Brendon
Bock of Franklin Square was runner-up in his Bock Motorsports racer,
while Vinny Delaney of Holtsville was third in the Joe Sole owned mount.
