Riverhead Raceway Inks
Two NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Events For 2013 Season - June 29th And
September 14th
During
the recent NASCAR Whelen Champion's Celebration held the second weekend
of December in Charlotte, N.C., Riverhead Raceway owners and promoters
Barbara & Jim Cromarty announced in conjunction with NASCAR Whelen
Modified Tour officials that the fabled tour will make two stops on Long
Island in 2013. The cars and stars of the NASCAR WMT will first compete
at Riverhead on Saturday June 29th with a second race set for Saturday
September 14th; both races will use the "Flash" format.
Riverhead Raceway and the Thompson, Ct. Speedway remain the only two
tracks that have hosted at least one NASCAR WMT race since the inception
of the tour in 1985. In fact the first year of the WMT in 1985, the
Cromarty's swung their gates open to the WMT for three mid-week programs
with Jimmy Spencer of Berwick, pa winning the first two before NASCAR
Hall of Famer, the late Richie Evans of Rome, N.Y. topped the August
race. The WMT will race in 14 events in 2013.
"It's been said and we agree that NASCAR Modified fans are the most
passionate in racing and we couldn't agree more" the Cromarty's noted
and added, "we'll take that one step further and say that our Riverhead
Raceway fans are as passionate about their racing as any in the
country". After the July 28th Riverhead 200 was washed out by a heavy
storm system that swept over the Northeast the Cromarty's along with WMT
Race Director Chad Little and NASCAR'S George Silbermann decided to run
the race on September 15th.
As the old adage states "good things come to those who wait" truly came
into play when the Riverhead 200 was eventually contested on that rain
date. The lead swapping, side by side racing between Ryan Preece and
Eric Goodale for the race lead were indeed a throw back to a good old
Richie Evans and Charlie Jarzombek tussle. Once he withstood the Goodale
challenges Preece would then have to survive a green, white and checker
finish with Jimmy "Showtime" Blewett who was deemed to get the jump on
Ryan on the race's final restart, a no-no as per NASCAR race procedure
that sent Jimmy to the last of the lead laps cars while Ryan Preece
drove to victory lane.
The Riverhead 200 triumph for Preece was his second career WMT win on
Long Island and his third win of the 2011 campaign at Riverhead. Prior
to wheeling the Flamingo Motorsports entry to victory in September, Ryan
won twice in Bill & Barbara Park's JAD Carpet Showcase Chevy including a
win in the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 on July 21st.
Aside from the fight for the lead the 2012 Riverhead 200 featured some
great battles for position throughout the field and, best of all; the
race had minimal caution flags allowing the storylines and the fight for
position to be raced out. "Indeed last year's race was among the best
we've ever seen" Barbara & Jim reflected, "we can only hope for the same
high level of competition this year, twice!"
Make plans now for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Riverhead Raceway
June 29th and September 14th at Barbara & Jim Cromarty's famed quarter
mile oval where the 2013 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will open
Saturday evening May 4th with a seven for one race card featuring Twin
30's for the NASCAR Modifieds.
