"EYE ON RIVERHEAD" by Bob Finan
Friday, January 11, 2013
Happy New Year, race fans, hope all of you enjoyed a joyous holiday season and with that behind us now it's time to look ahead to the fast approaching 2013 season at our Riverhead Raceway!
First and foremost the Riverhead Raceway Indian stands tall once again. As promised by track owners Barbara & Jim Cromarty the Indian who was chopped in half by Superstorm Sandy was repaired by Christmas time and stood tall, complete with a wreath around his neck for the holidays. Once again John Ellwood and his team including Charlie Z and Magic Mike deserve a tip of the hat in completing the repair. The Cromarty's and all of us at Riverhead Raceway were amazed how much attention and love was sent the Indian's way both locally and nationally!!!
The 2013 schedule was released just days after our final Eye of last year and what a schedule it indeed is. Of course you can download it from this very web site but of course perhaps the biggest news is the fact that Barbara & Jim Cromarty will host 2 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events this coming season! Saturday June 29th will be the Hoosier Tire 200, the first of those two stops for the WMT while the second race, the Green Earth Technologies 200, will unfold on Saturday evening September 14th some three months later. Ryan Preece won the 2012 Riverhead 200 in his Flamingo Motorsports #16 and you can bet he along with the likes of Justin Bonsignore, Ron Silk and "TC" Ted Christopher are just a few drivers happy about the two race format this year.
Opening weekend is all set for Saturday evening May 4th and Sunday afternoon May 5th as Riverhead Raceway opens its 63rd season of stock car racing and family entertainment fun!
One other eye catching aspect to the new schedule comes over Labor Day weekend when the KSR Monster Trucks will again invade Riverhead Raceway featuring Bigfoot and friends! Saturday August 31st for the first time since they've been thrilling fans on Long Island Bigfoot and his fellow competitors will take part in a Monster Truck Figure Eight event!!! Now that I want to see.
Also Enduro teams and fans should note the Sunday September 1st portion of the Labor Day weekend program will find a new 5:00 pm start time in effect, however if the Monday rain date is needed the start time will move back to 12:30 pm.
Again for the full slate click onto the schedule link and make your plans now!
Going into the new season Riverhead Raceway has positions available on our NASCAR Whelen All-American Series officials staff including an inspector among other spots as well as the Event Staff. If you are interested and can dedicate your Saturday's and some select Sunday's then please call the track office at 631-842-RACE or send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org
Next up will be the 2013 Champion's Luncheon at Senix Creek Inn of Center Moriches and on that front, folks, I must announce that there will be a $10 charge at the door for this event. We at Riverhead Raceway as well as Charles & Judy from Senix Creek tried to avoid the admission fee but in the end it was necessary to cover the delicious food they will be serving for that afternoon. The luncheon will again be very casual and again start at 12:30 pm; seating is limited so please arrive early.
After the luncheon all eyes will turn to the annual Long Island Daytona 500 Party that yours truly and Stephen Halpin host at Steve's TJ Halpin's. Hard to imagine this but the party is now is in its fourth decade and it's all thanks to you the most ardent fans in motorsports. For details on the 500 party Sunday February 24th please visit our press release link and we hope to see you for a rocking good time.
News has been a bit slow as per usual during the winter months but we've had a few folks stop by Indy 3000 and say hello and fill us in on their 2013 plans, or sent us word via Facebook so let's catch-up.
Impressive 14-year old NASCAR Modified pilot Vincent Biondolillo stopped by with some great holiday cookies prior to Christmas and told us that he'll run Riverhead Raceway in the same Premier Utility Service #06 he ran last year. However the new wrinkle for 2013 is his parents Andrew & Michelle have purchased an all-new 2013 Troyer Engineering chassis so that they can test the waters of the NASCAR WMT when their Riverhead schedule allows.
David Roys will run full time at Riverhead in 2013 in his PRC #26 NASCAR Modified. PRC which stands for Product Remanufacturing Centers purchased the former Bill Park NASCAR Modified for Roys from Justin Strumpf late last year and Roys will make a run at the 2013 title. PRC will again field the #20 Charger for second generation driver Chad Churilla this year as well, Churilla had some good late season runs at Riverhead as well as off the Island in the fall.
Bill Park stopped by the job last week sporting a walking stick, nice way to say cane, after some recent knee replacement surgery. The surgery went well and Park is already pumped-up about his 2013 Riverhead plans as he'll again have the 2012 WMT Most Popular Driver Ryan Preece at the wheel of his JAD Carpet Showcase Chevy. Remember this car was shelved late last year due to a grinding crash and the backstretch but Bill along with his wife Barbara have absorbed a very expensive repair because in Bill's words they are having as much fun racing now as they ever have. That's saying a lot for a team that has been around since 1971. How excited is Team Park, the car could be ready to race in a week or two according to the former 4-time Riverhead champ.
Speaking of four time champions Chris Turbush sent word over the holidays that his potent #81 "Dangerous" Dave Koenig Motorsports Super Pro Truck is for sale, turn key $9,000. However if the truck does not sell before opening night May 4th, then Chris plans on placing nephew Mark Stewart behind the wheel. Mark will be the 4th generation of the racing Turbush family at Riverhead Raceway if the plan comes together. The East End Kart Racing club star recently pocketed a stellar 10th place finish in the Champ Kart portion of the Indoor TQ Midget race in Rhode Island to gear up for the new season!
Congratulations to Jimmy Wichert and the Unique Golf team for being voted the #1 Golf Store once again on Long Island in a poll held by the Long Island Press!! Wichert informs us that 2012 Charger champion Jeremy McDermott will again steer the Statewide Roofing Late Model in 2013. In just 4 starts last year McDermott was barely out of the top five and was 10th in the final points. Jim will also continue to compete in the 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro this year in what Wichert calls his "golf game"
Saw Ken Hyde Jr. #58 this week and he will be a man on a mission in Figure Eight competition this year. Ken informed us that his No Chem #58 is all stripped down, being sand blasted and ready for paint in the days to come. Ken who won the Cromarty Cup 20 this past season noted the team can use some additional sponsors but no matter what will be ready for opening night!
Talked with Dan Jivanelli the other day and his plans for 2013 are much like those of 2012, he's looking for a ride. Dan did a great job filling in for Ted Christopher in the Eastport Feeds #15 of Wayne Anderson last year, always running up front. Jivanelli noted that Anderson and Christopher had not finalized their plans for 2013 yet and he's not sure what this does if anything for his.
Happy to announce that Golden Auto Body will be back for their 12th year as a Super Pro Truck seasonal sponsor as Charlie Rizzo continues the tradition started by the late great Larry "King" Costa.
Donaldson's Volkswagen-Subaru of Sayville will again provide Riverhead Raceway and yours truly with a VW pace car in 2013, something they've done since 1989!!!
Tuesday January 29th is a night you might want to visit TJ Halpin's in South Setauket as my son Billy will be the guest bartender, please order some of the more complicated drinks if you can and make him sweat! Steve and Billy will again join me in the booth this year.
Until next time - BF
