"EYE ON RIVERHEAD" by Bob Finan
Tuesday, August 13, 2013
This coming Saturday evening August 17th three legendary names in the rich 63-year history of Riverhead Raceway will take their rightful place on our Wall of Fame. Barbara & Jim Cromarty will induct Wayne Anderson, Bill Park and the late Joe Biondolillo Jr. onto the Wall during an on-track ceremony. Hopefully you can join us for this very special night that will find the NASCAR Modifieds running Twin 30's, the Late Models going 50-laps and the Legend Race Cars who will run a INEX National Qualifier 30-lap main event. All three classes will qualify via time trials and be joined by the Figure Eights, Blunderbusts and Super Pro Trucks. Please join us for this very special evening.
After missing the last two race meets at Riverhead Raceway Ryan Preece showed no signs of rust as he won the Miller Lite night 35 NASCAR Modified feature event, his third of the year in the JAD Carpet Showcase Chevy #20. For awhile it looked as though Jason Agugliaro #69x might have Preece covered but with just 8-laps to go Ryan made one of his patented inside moves to drive to victory. Ryan will be at Riverhead for the next few races we're told including this week when car owner Bill park is inducted onto the Wall of Fame.
NASCAR Modified points: 1. Howie Brode, 324 2. Timmy Solomito, 247 3. Shawn Solomito, 230 4. Tie- Ryan Preece & Dave Sapienza, 224
After his bitter disappointment the week before Jeremy McDermott #4 came back with a vengeance this past Saturday night to win the Miller Lite 25-lap Late Model feature. Jeremy made a nice lap 2 early race pass of Shawn Patrick #88 to roar out front and once in the lead he checked out on the field in the SDS Telecommunications Dodge. The win also moved Jeremy into the point lead and with time trials determining the 50-lap feature McDermott will be looking for his second straight win. By the way a big thank you to Jeremy's car owner Jim Wichert for selling two complete sets of laps for this week's race which should draw the best LM field of the season.
Late Model points: 1. Jeremy McDermott, 301 2. Tie Scott Kulesa & Mike Bologna, 297 4. Roger Oxee, 294 5. Chris LaSpisa, 291
CJ Lehmann drove his Cotton Candy Express #1 Charger car to a hard fought victory Saturday evening for his first win of the season in his Your Floor Store Chevy. CJ had to withstand a torrid battle with the likes of Eric Zeh, "Radiant" Ray Minieri and eventual runner-up Chad Churilla before he could lay claim to the win. After taking the checker CJ then performed one of the best burnouts we've seen at Riverhead Raceway and the children on hand to see Megasaurus really enjoyed it!
Charger points: 1. Eric Zeh, 418 2. Chris Turbush, 412 3. Ray Minieri, 402 4. Tie CJ Lehmann & Chad Churilla, 394
The race of the night would be the Miller Lite night Super Pro Truck main event with Roger Turbush, the defending champion in the class rim riding the outside lane to victory for the 16th time in his career. After spending much of the race chasing leader Brian McElearney with Mike Albasini the driver of the Allied Air Conditioning #88 Chevy threw his machine to the outside and worked his way around McElearney for the popular win. It was indeed a pleasure to watch all three race in the tightest of quarters for laps on end and never make too much contact, a short track classic for sure.
Super Pro Trucks: 1. Frank Dumicich Jr., 308 2. Lou Maestri, 296 3. Mike Albasini, 290 4. Roger Turbush, 284 5. Tie Erin Dumicich-Solomito & Frank Dumicich Sr., 276.
Kyle Ellwood just two weeks removed from having his car heavily damaged in a grinding crash with his teammate Jeffrey Goodale #46, drove his Riverhead Building Supply #71x to his 4th win of 2013. The young crew worked feverishly on both Ellwood's and Goodale's cars to get them race ready and Kyle rewarded them with the "W". It was no easy win though as "The Natural" Timmy Solomito put the heat on Ellwood for a good part of the race and was all over the eventual winner.
Legend Race Car points: 1. Kyle Ellwood, 454 2. Brendon Bock, 416 3. Kyle Soper, 414 4. Tie Timmy Solomito & Justin Strumpf, 404
Jason Savoy in his Monster's Recycling #86 topped the Miller Lite night 4-Cylinder Demolition Derby outlasting newcomer Andrew Ferrante, Ferrante was named Judge's Choice.
After coming within 8-laps of his first career NASCAR modified victory, Jason Agugliaro, driver of the Tom O'Keefe & Sons Chevy, came up with the line of the night when he quipped, "I wish there was a NASCAR Modified Tour race tonight" Of course if there were Ryan Preece would not have been at Riverhead. A great run none the less for this team and that elusive win is not too far off in the distance.
It was a tough night if you were at the top of the Late Model points last Saturday. Scott Kulesa #10 was the point leader going into the race and had to pit with a damaged shock, his team made the repair and just missed making the gate prior to a restart. Roger Oxee #39 his nearest rival had his own issues just laps later with a right front flat on the Southold IGA Pontiac and he was forced to the infield. Both drivers are looking to rebound this week.
Folks, Chad Churila in the Race For Kids Angela's House #20 Charger, has had enough of the runner-up and third place finishes; he wants his first career win and watch for him to go after it on August 24th when the class returns to action.
Nice race turned in by Brian McElearney #99 in his Finishline Demolition & Masonry Chevy, he ran hard and clean and gave Roger Turbush the outside line before he settled for runner-up money in the SPT feature.
Kyle Soper and his Legend team have found something in their Moriches Bay Diner #4 as they were fast Saturday grabbing a third place finish.
Great to have Chuck Steuer back at Riverhead Raceway for a cameo in the Joe Ambrose Jessup Landscaping #3. After sorting the car out in practice Chuck drove it home for 5th place money. Steuer is 8th in points in the FASTRACK Crate Sportsman class on the dirt at New Egypt Speedway.
After the races we visited with Charger driver Tom Anderson and his #23 Robert's Asphalt team who thought they had blown a clutch however the good news, one of the pressure lines leading to the clutch was faulty not the clutch itself.
Dave Sapienza and his #5 NASCAR Modified team want to welcome aboard Heller Construction to their team as a new sponsor, Dave was a solid third in the Miller Lite night 35.
Saw "The King of Queens" Mike Albasini after the races and he told me he was all set to go to the outside late in the SPT but admitted "Roger beat me to it", Mike was third in the KJ Farrell's Pub Chevy.
Wayne Anderson and his Eastport Feeds NASCAR Modified team went through some personnel changes last week. Jerry Solomito Sr. is now calling the shots for son Timmy for the rest of the season, they were 6th last week.
Danny Watts made his 2013 debut in the Danny's Cesspools Chevy #82 NASCAR Modified; he was 15th after an early race spin off turn two.
Two new Legend Race Car drivers on hand for the first time last week. Gary Molnar debuted in the #2x; Gary told us that he ran a Modified at Islip well over 30-years ago. He was 27th. Ed Cheslak only warmed-up his #89 Legend racer which he and his father Wayne, a former Islip Speedway Figure Eight driver, bought down in South Carolina. Ed started the season off in the #91 Figure Eight car.
Chris LaSpisa #7 sure did have a never say die attitude in the Late Model feature. After being forced to the pits with a flat early, Chris roared back to a third place finish in the Sprinklers Galore Irrigation Chevy.
Super run for Greg Harris with a 5th in the Legend Race Car feature in his Essential Chiropractic #65.
Christian Conklin would like to thank "Cheesebox" Michael Rommeney for the use of his #14 Legend machine last week which yielded the team a 15th place finish.
"J-Rod" Jarrod Hayes #08 broke the Chuck Deon powered Late Model out of mothballs Saturday, he was 8th in the feature which he ran as a tune-up for this Saturday night's 50-lapper.
Tough hit in the Legend feature as Vinny Delaney #17 had nowhere to go but into a spin out with Brad Van Houten #09. Both cars took a licking but luckily both drivers were fine and will have some work to do before this week's 30-lap National Qualifier.
Rich Campo having a season long issue with his motor in his NY Auto Giant Super Pro Truck #38 team, Rich has spent way more money then he would have liked to this year.
Great to see North Carolina Late Model driver David Latour Jr. and his Mom Sue at the races last week. David was helping out his Uncle, Ken Darch on his #03 NASCAR Modified. Darch called his car "evil" after the races and is scratching his head for answers.
EJ Heim #28 won the "Tiger" Tom Baldwin Hard Charger of the Race award by moving up five spots in the NASCAR Modified feature.
Demo driver George Astacio #911 now wants to be known as "Curious" George.
Until next week - BF
