"EYE ON RIVERHEAD" by Bob Finan
Well, the first month the of the off season has come and gone with two Riverhead Raceway drivers finding victory lane off the Island, some news on a new racing class at Riverhead and other tid bits of information coming out during the month.
As we disclosed on Facebook very early in the month the popular Bandolero class is coming to Riverhead Raceway in 2014!!! Barbara & Jim Cromarty along with Mike Cappiello have worked on this since about mid summer and it now has come to be. The Bandolero class is very popular across the country and while some details such as race days and so forth are being worked out further information on the "Bandos" as they are known as can be had by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Suffolk Association of Figure Eight Racing (SAFER) has moved their annual awards dinner up some six months and will be hosting their annualaffair Sunday November 17th at the Smithtown Landing Country Club. Ken Hyde Jr. will be officially crowned the 2013 SAFER Figure Eight champion at the dinner that starts at 4:00 pm. As per usual there will be plenty of special awards dished out during the evening as well as the 2013 SAFER point fund to eligible drivers in good standing with the club. Three new members will be enshrined into the Ernie Maynor SAFER Hall of Fame, I know who they are but have been sworn to secrecy. Here is a hint, one is perhaps the most important person to the racers at the track who is not on our staff, one is a former six time feature event winner many years ago in the Figure Eights who later went on to a very successful NASCAR Modified career and the third is a former SAFER Championship car owner who has recently returned to the game! Tickets are priced at $60 per ticket which includes 4-hour open bar, buffet dinner proceeded by appetizers, a DJ for your dancing pleasure and of course the SAFER awards! The event is coming up quick and is open to the general public, to order yours today call Joe Saraceno or myself at Indy 3000 Fast Lube, 631-447-5823.
Christie Harris and her lovely mother Elaine have disclosed that the Enduro awards dinner will be staged on Saturday evening December 7th at JC'S Restaurant of Manorville. The Enduro points, as you all know, are done on a buy in system and those drivers who were part of that process will receive their trophies and point funds checks that evening. For further information on the event please "like" Long Island Enduro Racing on Facebook and you'll find all the details there! James Charrier (Grands), Greg Harris (4/6-Cyl. Trucks), Ed Brown Jr. (8-Cylinders) and Joe Warren Jr. (4/6-Cyl. Cars) will all be feted for their championship season.
The Riverhead Rewind is now in full swing on Wednesday evenings at TJ Halpin's with two weeks already in the books. Every Wednesday evening at 7:00 Stephen Halpin rolls out the red carpet for feature event winners at Riverhead Raceway as not only does he show the races they won but also buys the winning driver dinner for two! The next installment will be this Wednesday November 13th with the June 1st race program being featured, so if you won on June 1st, head on over to TJ Halpin's, have dinner for two on the house, bring your crew and relive your victory! TJ Halpin's will again be the site for the one and only LI Daytona 500 Party on February 23rd, 2014!
Great to see Jimmy Rennick Jr. will be back in the Riverhead Raceway pit area in 2014 as he recently purchased a Super Pro Truck from Rob Bader. Rennick will run the #4 on his new ride and is currently busy rounding up sponsors for his 2014 effort. Jimmy is the brother-in-law of former two time Blunderbust champion Eugene Malverty #23, should be fun for sure!
Glad to see the recent Jason Trinca Memorial 48 for Sr. Champ Karts was a success earlier in October. The event was put together by WMT star Justin Bonsignore along with Linda Solomito and of course Dave & Cindy Brigati of the EEKR. East West Marine of Manorville served as the title sponsor and the race was won by Timmy Sullivan of Connecticut who pocketed some $1,800 for his efforts. All in all the day was a good one in memory of aspiring racer 'Lil Jason Trinca. Justin a week later announced that he and car owner Ken Massa will once again be a team on the WMT in 2014 marking their 5th year together running the M3 Technology Chevy.
Pace Car sponsor Buzz Chew and his NASCAR Tour team made some big news recently when it was disclosed on November 1st that Bryon Chew has decided to step out of the Buzz Chew Chevrolet #88 in 2014. Bryon has been racing since his youth and with a growing family that includes 3 young children felt it was time to step back for awhile, a decision I think we all can understand. Enter "Chit Chat" Woody Pitkat of Stafford, Ct. who late in the WMT was told his Hill Racing Enterprises team was dropping off the Tour but he was not without a ride for long as he has been tabbed as the new driver for the Chew family. All of us wish the new combination well.
Please keep in mind on December 8th yours truly will be hosting the Long Island Automotive Swap Shop in the pit area at Riverhead Raceway starting at 10:00 am. Now I know it's no Thompson flea market but we do what we can to keep our own little Swap Shop going so please join us if you can. Vendor spots are just $20 while general admission is $5. Robert Clock, brother of our late handicapper Dwight Clock will be hauling out some of his Islip Speedway and old time photo albums and we encourage you to do the same. We'll set-up an area just for those folks who will only pay the $5 GA unless they plan on selling photos, then the $20 fee will apply. Facebook me for further info, rain date is December 15th.
Speaking of the Thompson Flea Market our spies tell us Russell Goodale came home with an SK Modified in his trailer to join the three Legend Race Cars he fields for Kyle Ellwood, son Jeffery and Brad Van Houten.
2013 Riverhead Raceway Legend Race Car champion Brendon Bock found even further success after we ended our season as he won twice in October at the Mountain Speedway earning their 2013 championship as well as in his A&S Bagels #33. Bock also won the New York State Pro Division championship for the second consecutive year.
The racing Pedersen Brothers Artie and Allan did plenty of racing after the Riverhead Legend Race Car season ended, while neither scored a victory, proud Papa Artie Jr. noted that Artie III was runner-up in the Young Lions standings in New York State. The team is already gearing up for 2014!
Rob "The Racer" McCormick dominated a Large Car Enduro to score the win at the Mahoning Valley Speedway in Leighton, Pa. We hear the driver of the Sneaker Aquarium of Riverhead #48 lapped the field three times in a 150-lap tilt! The old school racer Rob one week later did double duty, running a 100-lap race at Mountain Speedway on the asphalt Saturday afternoon then later that evening competing on the dirt at the Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey, he didn't win in those races but did score a top ten in each event!
Talk about a road trip! Roger Maynor towed his Barrasso & Sons Mason Supplies Ford to the Citrus County Speedway in Inverness, Florida to run the Robert Aaron 50 Figure Eight event where he finished 4th.
Only two big post Riverhead Raceway season races remain in 2013 with the John Blewett III North-South Shootout this weekend and the traditional Turkey Derby over Thanksgiving weekend at the end of the month and hopefully we'll have some news on victories posted by our Riverhead Raceway regulars in our next Eye!
Until next time - BF
