Riverhead Raceway Readies For
June 29th Hoosier Tire 200 NASCAR WMT Event
by Bob Finan

For the first time since 2005 Riverhead Raceway will feature two NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races in a single season as Barbara & Jim Cromarty will host the Hoosier Tire 200 Saturday June 29th for the cars and stars of the popular touring series. Joining the Hoosier Tire 200 will be a 30-lap Blunderbust and a 30-lap Legend Race Car feature, with the Legend race winner to pocket $1,000 to win.

The last time the NASCAR WMT competed in the month of June on Long Island was back in June, 4th 2005 with "TC" Ted Chritstopher of Plainville, Ct. taking home the victory. The format for the Hoosier Tire 200 will find all cars qualifying for the 28-car field via time trials and NASCAR provisionals with the feature race going a distance of 200-laps. The format worked out extremely well last September when Ryan Preece of Berlin, Ct. notched his second career WMT win at Riverhead in an ultra-competitive race.

Preece and local driver Eric Goodale of Riverhead slugged it out for nearly the entire race in a good old fashioned short track duel which saw the duo swap the lead several times in a classic contest. Both Preece and Goodale have run the entire NASCAR Whelen All-American Series races in 2013 at Riverhead and are currently ranked among the top five in the Riverhead championship chase. They, along with Ted Christopher will all be part of the Hoosier Tire 200 field when the 28 cars roll-off on June 29th.

Defending WMT champion Doug Coby of Milford, Ct sure wants to reverse his fortunes from the 2012 race at Riverhead as he fell from the race with engine woes, Coby and current WMT point leader Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa will both be seeking a trip to victory lane. "Mighty" Mike Stefanik of Coventry, RI, Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, Bobby Santos of Franklin, MA. Jimmy "Showtime" Blewett of Howell, NJ, Ron Silk of Norwalk, Ct. and Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, NY will all be on hand as well.

Ken Heagy of Riverhead and Gary McDonald of Ronkonkoma are two mainstay Long Island drivers on the WMT and both are looking forward to racing in front of family and friends at Riverhead on the 29th. Jamie Tomaino of Howell, NJ, Ed Flemke of Southington, Ct. and Wade Cole of Riverton, Ct. are all seasoned veterans of the NASCAR WMT and will be on hand as well.

Of course at Riverhead the WMT teams have to deal with the competitive Riverhead Raceway locals. Among the hometown teams that have expressed an interest in running the Hoosier Tire 200 are Howie Brode of East Islip, Timmy Solomito who now drives for 1994 NASCAR WMT champion Wayne Anderson, plus Tom Rogers Jr. of Patchogue and John Beatty of Merrick.

Feature event racing will start at 6:00 pm Saturday June 29th with the Blunderbust and Legend Race Car 30-lapper preceding the Hoosier Tire 200 at Riverhead Raceway.
