Ryan Preece Hopes To Ride Recent Wave Of Good Fortune To
Hoosier Tire 200 Victory Lane June 29th At Riverhead Raceway
by Bob Finan
Rising NASCAR driving talent Ryan Preece of Berlin, Ct. is hoping to ride a recent wave of positive energy directly to victory lane Saturday night June 29th at Riverhead Raceway when the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour stops at Barbara & Jim Cromarty's historic oval for the Hoosier Tire 200. Preece's budding career over the past two seasons especially has been on the upswing and the 22-year old talent driver hopes to ride that momentum directly to the 2013 WMT title.
In preparing for the Hoosier Tire 200 Ryan Preece nailed down the Evans NASCAR Hall of Fame 100 Whelen All-American Series NASCAR Modified victory June 8th at Riverhead driving for former four time track champion Bill Park and his wife Barbara. That win was followed up with more good news some 60 hours later when it was announced that Preece was signed on by Tommy Baldwin Racing to drive the TBR Nationwide Series #8 with backing from East-West Marine at New Hampshire Speedway July 13th. That was just the latest in positive news Preece has enjoyed since 2012.
Preece, grandson of famed former car owner Bob Judkins won two NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races in 2012 including the September 15th Riverhead 200 which found Ryan first having to endure an epic side by side battle with Eric Goodale and then a late race restart with Jimmy Blewett to lay claim to his second career win at demanding quarter mile. Ryan's first WMT triumph at Riverhead came on August 1st of 2009 when he topped the 28-car field driving for the famed Boehler family. That year Ryan was runner-up in the championship standing to Long Island native Donny Lia of Jericho.
Ryan, in addition won a WMT race in 2012 at another tight quarter miler, the Monadnock Speedway in New Hampshire and also won the championship in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sunoco Modified division at the Thompson Speedway.
On Long Island last season aside from his WMT triumph in September, Preece won two NWAAS races in the JAD Carpet Showcase Chevy of the Park family including the prestigious Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 Memorial in July. All told including his HoF 100 win Ryan Preece has graced victory lane at Riverhead Raceway five times and hopes to make it six in the Hoosier Tire 200 fueled by his recent good tidings.
Two Long Island based teams are licking their collective lips for the Hoosier Tire 200 as Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville and former two-time WMT champ Donny Lia are more than familiar on how to get to the winner's circle at the 63-year old facility. Defending NASCAR WMT champion Doug Coby of Milford, Ct., who fell from competition early in the 2012 with engine woes hope to rebound with a victory on June 29th with Jimmy "Showtime" Blewett of Howell, NJ hoping the race owes him one after he was called for a late race penalty for jumping a restart.
Of course Eric Goodale of Riverhead, who along with Preece and Bonsignore has run some early season NWAAS events in 2013 at Riverhead Raceway would love to pocket his first career WMT win in front of family and friends. "Mighty" Mike Stefanik of Coventry, RI winner of the 2013 Icebreaker and Bobby Santos of Franklin, Ma who won the Spring Sizzler WMT stop will be tough to beat. Of course there is the always tough "TC" Ted Christopher of Plainville, Ct, Ron Silk of Norwalk, Ct and early season WMT point leader Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. all three have won before at Riverhead.
The usually strong contingent of NWASS weekly drivers and teams at Riverhead Raceway will be present and they include Howie Brode of E. Islip, Tom Rogers Jr. of Patchogue, Timmy Solomito of Islip, John Beatty Jr. of Merrick and Frank Vigliarolo Jr. of Mt. Sinai.
Race fans will be treated to 200 laps of racing for the Hoosier Tire 200 as it was announced recently by WMT officials and Riverhead Raceway management that the 28-car starting gird would be arrived at via time trials and the WMT provisional program that is in place.
The Legend Race Cars will race for history making $1,000 to win in their 30-lapper and be joined by the Blunderbusts who will also battle for 30-laps, both divisions will also qualify through time.
Can Ryan Preece keep his positive energy going in the Hoosier Tire 200? Will a WMT driver who has never won at Riverhead do so? Will a local Riverhead Raceway team score an upset win? There is only one way to find out and that is make your way to Riverhead Raceway Saturday June 29th and take in all the racing action up close and personal!
