$1,500 To Win National Demolition Derby Highlights
Miller Lite Night At Riverhead Raceway Next Saturday
by Bob Finan

Next Saturday night September 28th Riverhead Raceway will host Miller Lite Night featuring extra distance, non point races for five of the track's Saturday night NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions and when all the racing has been completed the attention will then turn to the 50th Anniversary National Demolition Derby Championship. The event will bring the best of the best to the 63-year old Route 58 oval and pay a handsome $1,500 to the winner. Jason Savoy of Lake Panamoka, LI is the defending event winner from 2012.

The Super Pro trucks will welcome long time seasonal sponsor Golden Auto Body and owner Charlie Rizzo to the track as they will compete in a 30-lap main event. Rizzo and his College Point based auto body firm have backed the Super Pro Trucks for some three decades, a tradition started by the late Larry "King" Costa the original owner and former competitor in the Super Pro
Trucks.

The rolling thunder of the Late Models will be heard for 50-laps and be joined by a 20-lap Figure Eight feature while the Chargers and Blunderbusts will run in 30-lap events. All classes with the exception of the Figure 8's will qualify via time trials that will start at 4:00 pm. An 8-Cylinder Enduro will also be presented on this very busy and competitive night of racing.

Once the stock cars are finished entertaining the fans it will be time to settle some scores and determine who the National Demolition Derby Champion will be. The event is marking its 50th Anniversary and began back in 1963 at the "World Famous" Islip Speedway. Over the years the name and format has changed but the bone jarring and car destroying remains as intense as ever!

Jason Savoy, who recently clinched the 2013 track championship for Demolition Derbies will be the man to beat in his Misery Machine and has built a special car for the $1,500 to win title.. Most recent winner at Riverhead Matt "The Maniac" Mulqueen of Levittown will be in the field as will the father & son team of Richard & Andrew Fowler of Wantagh. Andrew was the 2012 Demo champion at the famed quarter mile oval. Also expected to be on hand are "Curious" George Astacio of Shirley, "Mad" Mike Smith of Kings Park, "Pistol" Pete Mikos of Lake Ronkonkoma, Mike "Gravel" Buksa of Islip, Tom "The Madhatter" Kilkenny of Babylon and "The Killer Bee" Bob Benison of Lindenhurst. Some out of state competitors have expressed interest in trying to take the $1,500 in prize money off Long Island and in fact earlier this summer Charger driver Eric Zeh of Selden expressed interest in going after the big payday! There is also a cash prize for Judge's & Fan's Choice.

Qualifying for the Late Models, Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Pro Trucks will start at 4:00 pm with feature event racing to go green on Miller Lite night at 5:00 pm. In the event of rain only the National Demolition Derby event would be contested on Sunday September 29th in conjunction with the 12:30 pm Enduro program.
