James Charrier And Greg Harris Start
Riverhead Raceway Enduro Season With Victories
by Bob Finan
James Charrier of Shirley started his Grand Enduro title defense off in fine style Sunday afternoon as did 4/6-Cylinder Truck champion Greg Harris of Riverhead as they not only both did they both win their respective 50-lap feature events but did so in domination fashion. Rob "The Racer" McCormick of Calverton swept the two 8-Cylinder Enduro races while Peter Verwys Jr. of East Rockaway was declared the winner of the 4/6-Cylinder Car Enduro.
Grand Enduro newcomer Rob Bader paced the field for the first five laps of the feature event with David Antos giving chase for the first four laps before he was overhauled on lap 5 by James Charrier who started the race from 4th. Once to second Charrier wasted no time in making a bid on Bader for the lead which he did successfully on lap 6 with Bader now second and Antos third. As the race wore on Charrier was able to open a comfortable lead in his JC Performance Chevy, one he would enjoy to the finish. Steve Mastro of Port Jefferson would make a late race charge to second in his NY Auto Giant entry with Greg Zaleski of Jamesport third in the Blue Point Auto Body Chevy.
In the 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro Ben Gregor broke out to the early lead of the 50-lap feature with Don Nelson Jr. in pursuit but Nelson's day would end suddenly and not well on lap 4 when he dropped to the infield with mechanical failure. That moved Greg Harris to second and despite having to make up some track position Harris was able to reel in Gregor fairly quickly. Lapped trucks would play a pivotal role in the race on lap 13 when Gregor got caught up and Harris was able to sneak by the for the lead. Later things would then get even worse for Gregor when a lapped truck spun in front of him and he made heavy contact with Ciaran Gallagher who had spun. Both trucks were heavily damaged but both drivers were okay. When the race went back to green Greg Harris drove his SGS Stone Works Chevy S-10 to victory over "Handsome" Hank Hallock of Riverhead who made a late race bid for the win in his Westhampton Auto Salvage racer, Rob McCormick of Calverton placed third.
The day would get better, much better for Rob McCormick as he won both ends of the 8-Cylinder Enduro doubleheader. In the 75-lap opener Rob moved his Sneaker Aquarium Chevy into the lead on lap 5 and never looked back until the checkered flag waved. Mark Wolf of Shirley was runner-up Pleasant View Landscaping machine with Donald "Woot" Lawrence of Southampton crossing the line third in his Batmobile. In the nightcap McCormick again took the lead on lap 5 of a 40-lap affair to complete the afternoon sweep. Early race leader Jess Martines of Shirley was runner-up with Tom Talbot Jr, of Mattituck third.
Peter Verwys Jr. made a last lap pass of Brandon Esposito for what was thought to be second play in the 4/6-Cylinder Car Enduro but that all changed when the scorecards were audited after the race. Joe Warren Jr. crossed the line first but upon further review of his card imperfections were discovered and he was disqualified from the event. That out Verwys in the Usedautoparts.com entry in victory lane. Esposito of Farmingville was second while Michael Wahl of East Islip was third.
