ZEH, FULLER, NELSON, HALSEY & CONKLIN SHARE LABOR DAY ENDURO VICTORIES AT RIVERHEAD RACEWAY SUNDAY

Bob Finan PR

The second half of the Labor Day weekend racing at Riverhead Raceway was completed Sunday afternoon with Eric Zeh of Selden scoring his 4th Street Stock win of 2018 in a thrilling 40-lap affair while Steve Fuller of Manorville won the 30-lap Mini Stock race.

The Street Stock race would provide plenty of excitement late in the race as at one time six cars ran under a blanket for the win. Early on two former Blunderbust drivers fought for the lead as Chris Busick and Rhett Fogg ran one-two over the first 10-laps of the contest. Lap 11 found Eric Zeh who started the race from 7th make his way under Fogg for second in the first turn. Whet ensued was a torrid fight for the lead involving Busick and Zeh with Zeh coming to the lead with an inside pass on lap 19 in turn four. Busick however crossed Zeh over in an attempt to wrestle the lead back. Zeh's car rolled the top well however and he was able to thwart Buscik's advances to reclaim the lead. Meanwhile behind the lead duo the likes of Fogg, Anthony Pizzo, Dave Antos and Gerard Lawrence all ran in close quarter to the leaders side by side. Pizzo, who started the race 9th made his way under Busick in turn four for second on lap 25 and Anthony would spend the next five laps trying to find a way by Zeh. Adding the the excitement was some fouid left on the track by Sal Sinatro's blown engine adding another obstacle for the drivers. Zeh did slip for a moment in the oil with just over a lap to go but Pizzo wasn't able to get around him. At the finish it was Eric Zeh scoring his 4th win of the season in his Best Built Construction Chevy which also moved him by Glenn Simonin for the top spot on the win list for the two year old class. Anthony Pizzo of Lake Ronkonkoma was second in his United Exhaust Shop Monte Carlo with Dave Antos of Lindenhurst third in the EP Milling & Sweeping Chevy.

Steve Fuller would score the 30-lap Mini Stock race, the second of his career. Starting third Fuller made a bold move on the throw of the green to come from the third starting berth to the race lead. Paul Wojcik who started fifth came with Fuller to the front to tuck into second. As the race developed Fuller was able to get away from Wojcik primarily because Andrew Farnham came calling for second. The Wojcik/Farnham fight for second was getting intense which was just fine with leader Fuller. Lap 26 the fight for second got too close as Farnham wound up in the wall with Wojcik removed from the race for his role in the contact. With just four laps remaining Steve Fuller in his Gatawaycarz.com Honda was able to lead the rest of the way for the win. Russ Jansen of Medford was second in the Metal Masters racer while Jay Conrad of Riverhead was third.

Defending Truck Enduro champion Don Nelson Jr. of Rocky Point once again had lady luck on his side when he won the 40-lap Truck Enduro. Veteran Gary Voight sporting a new truck for the race broke to the early race lead and appeared to have the winning machine. Ben Gregor chased Voight for the first two laps before he was passed by Nelson on lap. Fast forward to lap 30 with Voight leading Nelson and suddenly the lead truck ducks to the infield with mechanical woes handing the lead over to Nelson. Over the final 10-lap Don Nelson hit his marks and took home the win in his Abner Tree Experts Chevy S-10. Matt Triola of Bay Shore was runner-up in the PCFI entry while "Pirate" Pete Rabaglia of Bohemia was third.

Third generation driver Jared Halsey of Southampton took home his second career win in the 40-lap 8-Cylinder Enduro. Pat Collins paced the race from the start before a red flag on lap 14 halted the action. When the green flag winked back on Jared Halsey who was running second was quicker back to the throttle on the standing start and put his Sabrosa Mexican Grill machine out front on lap 15. Over the final 25 laps of the race Halsey was flawless taking home the win with Mark Wolf of Shirley second in the Shirley Feed Chevy and early leader Pat Collins of Southampton third in the PC Truck Repairs machine.

Christian Conklin of Riverhead continues to own the Gut & Go class in 2018 at Riverhead Raceway taking home yet another win in their 60-lap feature. The drivers in the class still draw for position in registration and low and behold Christian grabbed the pole. Needless to say Conklin led the entire distance of the race in dominating fashion for the win in his Spit Speed Shop Hyundai. Dan Dimodugno of Smithtown and James Johnson of Yaphank were second and third. The race was red flagged for a hard hit by veteran Joe Palmeri Sr. who had the throttle stick on his car. After a few anxious moments Joey was removed for further evaluation at Peconic Bay Medical Center.
