GERARD LAWRENCE & PAUL WOJCIK TOP ENDURO EXTRAVAGANZA WINNERS SUNDAY AT RIVERHEAD RACEWAY
On a bright fall Sunday afternoon the 2021 regular season at Riverhead Raceway drew to a conclusion with the running of the Enduro Extravaganza program. Among the story lines were the Street Stock win of Gerard Lawrence of Miller Place and the Mini Stock victory of Paul Wojcik of Patchogue, who actually crossed the line fifth. However the biggest headline was the 2021 Truck Enduro championship won by Mariah Lawrence of Southampton, making her the first female champion in forty years at the track.
With 10-points separating Brian Brown of Riverhead and Gerard Lawrence of Miller Place for the 2021 Street Stock title both drivers had a very specific game plan entering the 30-lap feature. Brown's game plan was to not let Lawrence out of his sights. Gerard's strategy was to go out and win the race and let the chips fall where they may. Both drivers stuck to their plan. Roger Oxee paced the first mile of the race leading until being passed by Jay Henschel on lap 4. Henschel at first appeared headed for his second win of the year but as the race moved along his car got tight, real tight. Rhett Fogg who came to second on lap 5 pressured Henschel lap after lap to no avail. With Henschel doing all he could do to protect the lead and Fogg trying to get by without contact the pace of the race slowed. Gerard Lawrence who started 6th was faster than the two leaders. With the laps winding down Gerard had to make his move. He first got by Fogg for second and now was all over Henschel who was aggressively playing defense. With just over a lap left Lawrence went for broke making a move for the race lead while Henschel bobbled trying to throw the block. When the dust settled on the wild affair Gerard Lawrence in the Lafo's Performance Glass Chevy won the battle with his second win of the year but lost the championship war. Rhett Fogg was runner-up in the Accu-Rhett Chevy while Brian Brown of Riverhead crossed the line third in the Robert's Express Oil Chevy earning him the Street Stock title. Brian was not even slated to run the full season in the Jay Hulse tribute car. Owner Rob Bader was scheduled to take over early in the season after recovering from a wrist injury. After Brown won the May 2nd Meltdown and led the points early in the season Bader never did get behind the wheel.
The biggest drama of the day came well after the 30-lap Mini Stock feature was over. When the race ended it appeared that CJ Zukowski of Riverhead had won his fourth race of 2021 and his second consecutive championship. However post race inspection bit not only Zukowski but the top four drivers who followed him over the line. Zukowski, Ryan Warren, Joe Cooke Jr. and Andrew Farnham were all found with unapproved camber in their front suspensions and disqualified from the event. The left Paul Wojcik of Patchogue who crossed the line fifth in his Moe's Southwest Grill Restaurants of Long Island racer not only being declared the race winner but also the 2021 Mini Stock champion. It is Paul's second career Mini Stock title. Tom Puccia of Shirley was runner-up in the race with his On Site Cleaning Service entry while Tony Collinsworth of Calverton was third in the Walls of Fame machine.
Two Bandolero features were contested on the afternoon. In the 15-lap Group B main event Tucker Bock of East Hampton over came a early practice crash to score his second win of 2021. Giavanna Agugliaro paced the first five laps of the race seeking her second win of the year but Bock who started 5th on the grid made his way by for the lead on lap 6. Once out front Bock wheeling the One Stop Market racer never looked back scoring the hard earned victory. Giavanna Agugliaro of Islip was runner-up in the Cesspool Pros entry while Wayne Meyer Jr. of Calverton placed third in the L.I. Poultry machine.
Darren Krantz Jr of Huntington notched his fourth Bandolero Group A feature event win in a 15-lap contest that earned him the overall 2021 Bandolero championship. Nicholas Hodge broke to an early and commanding lead at the throw of the green opening up a comfortable cushion. However suddenly on lap 4 Hodge spun handing the lead over to Krantz who started fifth in the six car field. Once out front in the Angela's House racer Darren Krantz Jr. pulled way for the win and the championship. Chevy Rommeney of Bohemia who also overcame damage from a practice crash was runner-up in the Cheeze-It racer while Ben Morabito of Miller Place crossed the line third in the Benimax Trucking Bando.
With two Truck Enduro set for the afternoon, the first a rain out from August 21st and the other a regularly scheduled 40-lapper Mariah Lawrence of Southampton and Gary Voight of Medford were the main championship combatants. In the first 40-lap event Phil LaManna of Smithtown dominated the race leading all 40 circuits in route to his second win of '21 in the EP Milling & Sweeping Chevy S-10. Jarrett Campbell of Yaphank was runner-up in race one with Mariah Lawrence of Southampton third. That finish, coupled with Gary Voight finishing sixth gave Mariah a 22-point lead heading into the nightcap.
In the nightcap LaManna would not be as dominate as he was earlier actually losing the lead to Jarret Campbell on lap 15. However LaManna stormed back on lap 21 reclaiming the lead and scoring his second win in less than three hours. Campbell and Lawrence were once again second and third while Voight was able to finish fourth. With the two third place tallies Mariah Lawrence became the first female driver since the late Peggy Smith to win a Riverhead Raceway track championship. Peggy was the 1981 Grand Am champion.
Halfway through the season Carmine Ragusa asked Woot Lawrence to take over as driver of his 8-Cylinder Enduro car. Sunday the new partnership paid dividends when Lawrence won the 50-lap main event. Ricky Carman led the first dozen laps of the race before Rob "The Racer" McCormick, making his first start in a few seasons took the top spot on lap 13. Five laps later Carman reclaimed the lead and would lead up until lap 30 when he was collected by lapped traffic ending his race in the first turn wall. McCormick moved back out front but his car was showing heavy blue smoke and two laps later blew the engine ending his comeback win bid. Woot Lawrence who started 22nd on the grid was running second when McCormick blew up, took the lead and drove to his first 8-Cylinder win of 2021 in the Travers Tools Chevy. Greg Harris of Riverhead was runner-up in the General Welding Supplies Chevy with Kevin Feeney of East Quogue third. In the chase for the 2021 8-Cylinder Enduro championship 1998 Charger champion Richie Carman of Port Jefferson Station on the merit of a fifth place finish sewed up the 2021 championship in his United Exhaust Shop Chevy.
Zach Tyler of Cutchogue won his second point paying 4/6-Cylinder Gut & Go Enduro of 2021 when he topped their 60-lap main event. Tyler first broke to the lead on lap 6 but with 51 cars on track negotiating lapped traffic was going to be fun. Joe Warren Jr. and former Figure Eight champion Mike Mujsce Sr. gave Tyler all he could handle over the course of the race. Unfortunately Warren would have mechanical failure end his race prematurely leaving Mujsce to challenge Tyler. As the race wore on Zach Tyler in the Miller & Caggiano Attorney's At Law racer would pull away for the win. Mike Mujsce Sr. of Westhampton was runner-up in the Mike's Auto Service racer while 2021 4/6-Cyinder Enduro champion John Palmeri of Lindenhurst was third. Coming into the race Palmeri trailed Frank Raynor of North Sea by two points. By placing third in his J&J Towing entry coupled with Raynor coming home 8th, Palmeri took the title.
