A very strong field of 25 NASCAR Modifieds graced the pit area Saturday for the Rapid Recovery night 35-lap feature event and when all was said and done Tom Rogers Jr. #0 became the first repeat winner of the season. His performance wasn't quite as spectacular as his May 12th win when he romped from the last row of the field to take the lead and eventual win but he did have to earn it early on. Rogers quipped after receiving the Rapid Recovery Towing hardware that if the sponsor knew he worked for Frankie's Towing they'd want their trophy back!! Despite missing a week Tom is now just 10 points back of third place Shawn Solomito #66 in points. 216 to 206 and as we saw two years ago, don't count him out!
Timmy Solomito was back in his American Tent #99 and led the first lap before Rogers got the jump on him in an early race restart on the second lap. None the less "The Natural" had to be happy with the result. By the way the News 12 Riverhead Raceway commercials featuring Timmy debut this week, so check them out there or click onto the link on our homepage.
John Fortin #48 scored a third place finish in the SGS Stone Works Chevy and for the second week in a row trimmed Howie Brode's championship lead. Howie has a 22-point advantage over Fortin, 254 to 232 going into this week's Cody's BBQ & Grill action.
Shawn Solomito #66 was back in his Meade's Welding & Fabricating Chevy and crossed the line fourth and as we mentioned above stays third in points. Shawn couldn't praise John Meade and his craftsmanship enough and also wanted to thank his Mom & Dad, Uncle Glenn, Uncle Kris, Butch Capuano as well as the Fatcher and Goodale families for getting him back in his own machine. Many including the Solomtio's thought the car was a write off until Meade's Welding & Fabricating got a hold of it!
Dan Jivanelli was 5th in the Eastport Feeds Chevy of Wayne Anderson after a heated battle with Brad Van Houten for the position late in the race. In his two starts in the famed #15 Dan has not been out of the top five.
Brad Van Houten #09 finally got the dark cloud that had be hanging around him to clear in the form of a sixth place finish in the Van Houten Trucking Camaro and hopes to keep the trend moving forward this week.
Howie Brode #96 was 7th in the Peter Clark Motorsports Chevy and aside from leading the Riverhead Raceway points he'll also remain the New York State point leader for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.
Dave Sapienza brought the Flemington Furs Chevy home in 8th, his teammate Frank Vigliarolo Jr. in the Frankie's Towing Chevy was not so fortunate leaving on a double hook. Frank was 20th in the final rundown.
John Beatty Jr. #14 came home 9th in the North Shore Recycling entry and he remains 5th in points with 194.
Ken Darch completed the top ten in his Precision Water Works of Deer Park #03 racing his way to the finish from 18th in a fine drive.
The midnight oil will be burning at the Gershow Recycling race shop as all three of the team cars were damaged, with Don Howe #2 and Kevin Orlando #02 the worst of the three. Al Ermmarino #13 was able to return from his incident to make a few laps before calling it a night.
Bill Park #20 made his first start of the year and his night went south as well in the JAD Carpet Showcase Chevy and was 19th.
Marisa Niederauer #74 parked her car before the feature with brake issues.
By the way if you want to keep up to the second track of the NASCAR Modifieds and Legends via our transponders you can do so on your I-Phone or Android by going to Race Monitor and clicking onto Riverhead Raceway.
After a back injury shelved Jarrod Hayes for the start of the 2012 Late Model season the driver known as "J-Rod" came storming out of the gates in his first start of the year winning and dominating the 50-lap feature event. Hayes set fast time, drew a straight-up start and then walked away for the win. By the way his fast time of 12.388 was just over 2/10th's off the track record of Ed Densieski #24 12.19 set in 1992, on new pavement. Hayes pocketed an extra $200 for the win via a Sunoco Race Fuel bonus.
Scott Kulesa who was second quickest in a tie with a lap of 12.518 could only watch as Hayes drove away both at the outset of the race and some early race restarts. The soft spoken Kulesa was runner-up in the Eastport Feeds racer.
Perhaps the steadiest driver of 2012 in the Late Models is Shawn Patrick #88 who was third in the 50-lap tilt in his Matlach Fabricating Dodge; Shawn has averaged a 3.5 finish to date this year. He's now just eight points back of Mike Bologna #00 in points, 278 to 270.
Bologna was involved in a wild early race tangle in turn three that saw his car come to rest in part on the front hood of Rob Tribuzio's #01. The Schlaugies Fuel Oil team got Mike back out to salvage a 4th place finish and retain his point lead.
Peter "Buzzy" Eriksen #68 was squeezed into the cement in the early going as well and he was able to collect a 5th place finish in the Harley Davidson of Nassau County Chevy. "Buzzy" is third in points with 262.
Both Roger Oxee #39 in his Southold IGA Pontiac and Rob Tribuzio #01 in his Prototype Race Cars machine had much in the way of body damage from some of the rough going; Rob's body wasn't even a race old yet!
Late Models return July 14th.
He's young, he's smooth and he's talented, not bad for a 16-year old, right? Indeed Jack Handley Jr. #49 turned some heads in the 20-lap Blunderbust main event not because he won his second career feature but the fact that he came from a 17th place starting position to do so! Handley made some textbook moves on his way to the win in his Kudrick's Auto Body Chevy and in the process closed in on the top two in points Tom Pickerell #4 and Tommy Walkowiak #00. Jack is third with 248 and is just 4 back of second place Walkowiak and 6 behind leader Pickerell. Should be fun on July 7th when the class returns to racing!
Rob Bader #19 in the Tropical Smoothies Chevy was runner-up and prior to the action told us that that sponsor will increase their involvement for the rest of this year and has already committed to next year too! That is some great news for a race team at anytime of the year but better yet halfway through a season knowing you have the rest of this year and all of next sponsored.
"Turbo" Tom Sullivan #7 was shaking his head after the races when we ran into him, oh he was happy with his 3rd place finish in the Custom Exteriors Lincoln but told us his car is still some what off in power. He told us once he gets the handle on that, look out!
Jimmy "The Kid" White indeed went back to the set-up he ran in the earlier part of the year as he told us during the Father's Day Enduro show and it paid off with a 4th place finish in the Busy Bee Pest Control racer!
Scott Maliszewski #22 in his new black paint scheme was 5th in the Thomas J. Stock Attorney At Law Chevy.
Tom Puccia #51 had a good run for 6th in the Ferandino & Sons Contracting mount.
Ditto Fred Nolan #71 in the Mike's GM Village Buick.
"Krazy" Ed Mistretta #27 and "Pistol" Paul Parisi #69x are 4th and 5th in points with 226 and 216 respectfully, Parisi was 8th in his East End Jet Ski Chevy, while Mistretta in his Bams Auto Body entry was 9th in the feature.
Tom Pickerell and Tim Mulqueen #7 rebounded from separate rough riding calls and a trip to the rear of the field to place 10th and 11th.
Frank Dumicich Jr. #42 wasn't about ready to go winless in the Super Pro Trucks for a second year in a row as he scored the 20-lap victory in his Cross Fit of Long Island Chevy. Indeed 2011 saw Frank race right until the checker flag for the title with "Dangerous" Dave Koenig that Dave won but not winning a race didn't sit well with this ultra-competitive talent.
"The King of Queens" Mike Albasini #66 would bring his Gardner Specialty Auto Chevy home for runner-up money. The finish puts Mike atop the SPT standings by 2 over Chris Turbush #81, 224 to 222. Mike had some nice pictures of his daughter with New York Mets outfielder Mike Baxter on his Facebook page last week; the two are friends from Queens.
Lou Maestri #1 brought the Star Car Repair Centers Chevy home 3rd, after the races we saw Randy Murray from Lou's crew and he thinks they might have had a fuel issue of some sort during the race.
Chris Turbush #81 was 4th in the East-West Marine Chevy.
Erin Dumicich #95 completed the top five in her Sea Level Construction Dodge; she's currently third in points, 2 back of Chris Turbush with 220.
Kyle Ellwood #71x notched his second straight Legend Race Car feature event win in his Riverhead Building Supply machine and in the process stretches his point lead over Kyle Soper #12 to 26, 380 to 354. The Legends have their first week off in 2012 this week but return for the July 7th Fireworks program!
Kevin Nowak #53 scored second place honors Saturday as he was sandwiched between race winner Ellwood and Kyle's teammate Jeffery Goodale #46 who was 3rd in the Buckley's Irish Pub machine.
Chris Rogers#00 was 4th in his Maggio's Carting entry, while Vinny Delaney #17 keeps on rolling with a 5th place tally in his sponsor wanted racer.
Chris Young #49 is 3rd in Legend points with 338 trailed by Brendon Bock #33 with 334 and Vinny Delaney with 292.
The third dominating drive of the night Saturday was turned in by veteran Robin Vollmoeller #2 who spanked the 4/6-Cylinder truck Enduro field. How dominating you ask? Only the second place truck of Greg Harris #65 wasn't lapped by the winning Spit's Speed Shop Chevy!
Don Nelson Jr. was 3rd in the Repo Joe Used Auto Sales Chevy, while Greg DiCanio in the DiCanio Stump removal #83 and Russ Jansen in the Chapel Auto Wreckers of Medford #0 completed the top five.
Until next time - BF
