"EYE ON RIVERHEAD" by Bob Finan
Tuesday, October 29, 2012
Our first off season Eye is upon us and as we write it some "lady" named Sandy is bearing down on our area. Hopefully by the time you read this the storm will have passed with minimal damage and hopefully we all get through it.
The off season events are starting to come together so we address those first and then salute some Riverhead Raceway drivers who were victorious on the road since we last raced.
On Saturday December 1st I will be hosting the Long Island Automotive Swap Shop at the track from 10:00 am until 4 or 5:00 PM. We went with the Saturday format last year and it seemed to work well so we'll do it again this year. For race teams it's time to turn unwanted or excess inventory into racing capital for the 2013 season at Riverhead Raceway. For some, like Rob Bader #19 it's a chance to sell his Blunderbust so he can move to another division in 2013. For those shopping for a race car or truck this indeed is the event for you as the bargains will be plentiful. Most teams that show up with race cars, trailers and spare parts to sell would much rather sell them to you at a deal then having to load them back up and take them home! Vendors are charged a mere $20.00 per vending spot while general admission is just $5. We also encourage those who sell NASCAR Collectibles to come on out with their product as the Swap Shop is just 21-days prior to Christmas. Ditto the ever growing number of Riverhead Raceway teams who were selling T-Shirts and Sweatshirts this year, have some left over the Swap Shop is one way to sell them! Please do not call the Riverhead Raceway office for additional information but rather send me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or send me a private message on Facebook. Hope to see you December 1st!
Later that night at 9:30 PM the Suffolk Association of Figure Eight Racing (SAFER) will be hosting a Bowling Fundraiser at the Patchogue Bowling Center which is South off Main Street off South Ocean Avenue. It's going to be a fun filled night that includes 2 games of bowling, shoes, two slices of pizza and unlimited soda all for just $25. For more information please visit the new SAFER Facebook page or you can call Joe Saraceno at Indy 3000 Fast Lube at 631-447-5823.
The 2012 Riverhead Raceway Champion's Luncheon is now set for Sunday January 27th and once again it will be at the Senix Creek Inn of Center Moriches. Charlie and Judy of Senix Creek rolled out the red carpet for us earlier this year and we look forward to returning there again. Eight 2012 champions will be honored for their efforts this past year Shawn Solomito (NASCAR Modifieds), Mike Bologna (Late Models), Mike Mujsce (Figure Eights), Jeremy McDermott (Chargers), Tom Pickerell (Blunderbusts), Roger Turbush (Super Pro Trucks), Kyle Ellwood (Legend Race Cars) and Andrew Fowler (Demolition Derby). For further information please click onto the press release link of our web page.
On Sunday October 21st NASCAR Modified Rookie Vincent Biondolillo had his #06 Premier Utility Service Chevy at Indy 3000 Fast Lube of Mastic so some local Cub Scouts could not only get a look at his race car up close and personal but also learn the importance of car maintenance. The afternoon was a success and we thank Vincent and his team for taking the time out from their weekend to take part.
Already the 2012 off-season has been a tough and tragic one for our extended family with the loss of former Figure Eight driver Ralph Tasso and days later Ellen Denniston, wife of former race director Bill. Both indeed are gone too soon and all of us at Riverhead Raceway continue to think and pray for their families.
Over the years we would document how Riverhead Raceway teams would fare at post season events throughout the Northeast but with the combination of more and more teams competing in these events and the fact that we have pared the off season Eye down to about a once a month effort we salute those who took home victories.
Perhaps the most successful driver in the post Riverhead Raceway events has been Brendon Bock and his #33 Legend Race Car team. Brendon has won at both Mountain Speedway and the Bethel Motor Speedway since last racing on the Island. In fact Brendon and his team did something in mid-October that would have had the late Richie Evans smiling. After finishing second in a Saturday afternoon event at Mountain Speedway, Bock and his team quickly loaded up in St. Johns, Pa and raced towards Sullivan County, NY where he won 2 features in on night at Bethel Motor Speedway! Old school indeed.
Kyle Soper in his Atlantic Chevrolet-Cadillac #12 won that Legend Race Car feature event at Mountain Speedway that Bock was runner-up in. Soper with his mid-summer win at Riverhead Raceway and his road victory indeed had a very successful year.
Later in October it was Chris Rogers #00 scoring his first career Legend Race Car win at the Bethel Motor Speedway. The Maggio's Sanitation team are very well deserving of the win and he looks forward to taking home his first Riverhead Raceway checker flag in 2013.
2012 Riverhead Raceway Legend Race Car Champion Kyle Ellwood #71x was victorious on the road with his NELMA Legend Race Car triumph at Mountain Speedway on October 20th. By the way nice job by Kyle and his Riverhead Building Supply team to have their car all trimmed out in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month for that winning performance.
Short chutes: While speaking with Vincent Biondolillo last week he revealed his team has ordered a brand new chassis from Troyer Engineering...Speaking of Troyer, saw some Facebook pictures of Bill Park's #20 which was repaired with a new front and rear clip as well a new body. Ryan Preece drove the car in 2012...Jessica Cohan has her Lou's Towing #8 Blunderbust on the market as she and Bryan Quilliam are expecting next year. If the car does not sell by December 1st it will be at the Swap Shop...The rumor mill has one Blunderbust team building a brand new car for 2013...Collin Hoeffner will make his Legend Race debut in 2013, his dad Fred was a former Long Island Mini-Modified driver. Colin joins SPT driver Rich Campo as a second generation driver who's father raced with the Mini's. Of course all three Solomito brothers fall in that category too...Roger Maynor and his Barrasso & Sons Mason Supplies Figure Eight team were hoping to make a race down at Citrus County Speedway in Florida, but I'm guessing Tropical Storm Sandy might have changed those plans..
Until next time - BF
