The Legend Race Cars returned to Riverhead Raceway Sunday afternoon for the first time in many seasons and when the dust settled in a long 25-lap main event Silas Hiscock Jr. of Bridgehampton sat in victory lane. Ray Fitzgerald of Manorville picked-up where he left off in '07 by winning the first Grand Enduro of the 2008 campaign.
Early in the Legend feature Mike Malone and Silas Hiscock Jr. did battle, with numerous caution flags for mostly minor incidents being waved. Lap 6 found Michael Gervais Jr. out of New England overtaking Hiscock for second and set his sights on Malone for the lead. When there was green flag racing the duel between Malone and Gervais was intense, but that all came to a grinding halt on lap14 when Malone appeared to lose an engine going into turn one. Malone, Gervais, Paul Dodorico and Tony Naglieri were all done for the afternoon.
Once the clean up was completed the race resumed with Hiscock the new leader and he was now being chased by Legend newcomer Kevin Nowak and veteran driver Tom Enders Jr. and for the final 10-laps was able to keep the tandem at bay. At the checker it was Silas Hiscock Jr. in the Bridgehampton Tank entry scoring the win over Kevin Nowak of Medford in the NAPA Auto Parts entry and Tom Enders of Concord, N.C. in the Forest City Servicecenter racer.Ray Fitzgerald is already one of the all-time leading winners of Enduro racing at Riverhead Raceway with many wins in the 8-Cylinder class to compliment quite a few in the Grand Enduro ranks and he padded that total Sunday. Fitzgerald wheeled into the lead on lap 18 entering turn one he when he passed Greg Zaleski to the inside; Zaleski had led from the drop of the green.
For the final 32-laps of the 50-lap Grand Enduro feature Fitzgerald tried to shake Zaleski, but the latter was always able to stay within striking distance. At the conclusion it was Ray Fitzgerald the victor in the Oakfield Leasing Chevy, with Greg Zaleski of Southold runner-up in the Gallo's Used Auto Parts machine. Robin Vollmoeller Sr. of Riverhead place third in the Flanders Automotive Camaro.
Anthony Pizzo of Holbrook had a great day in 8-Cylinder Enduro action as he swept both ends of their two races on the day. Pizzo, steering the STS Tires entry won the 75-lap main event earlier in the day before repeating in the 50-lap nightcap.
After winning the Blunderbust main event the evening before, Tommy Walkowiak of Ridge made it a perfect weekend when he won the 50-lap 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro. The "Wildchild" was steering the Hampton Fleet Service truck of Jimmy White.
. Shawn Wanat of Riverhead the defending champion of the 6-Cylinder Enduro class started his title defense off on the right foot when he won their 50-lap feature in the Spits Speed Shop mount.
Not since the very first Enduro show at Riverhead Raceway on May 24th, 1986 had Peter Verwys Jr. of E. Rockaway won a race at the quarter mile, but that all changed when he put his Novack Auto Parts car into victory lane in the 60-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro.
Nick Herzberg of Holbrook won the Car Rollover Contest by three points over Brian Savoy of Lake Panamoka. Herzberg wasn't even sure he was going to make the haul to the track, but was glad he did in the end.
Spectator Drag veteran Pete Sherman Jr. of Port Jefferson Station drove his trusty 1985 Ford Mustang to victory in a spirited competition among 13 entrants.
